New cooking series on Teachers TV
The new format for Learning to Cook had its first outing on Teachers TV on 6th May in a series called Chefs Challenge. This features Chef Michael Coaker from The Academy of Culinary Arts, Chefs Adopt a School Scheme. In 55 minutes Michael is challenged to complete a cooking lesson in a single period and only just manages to get the pupils to complete their task – a spinach and ricotta pastry – yum! The challenge for schools is how to give cooking lessons the time they deserve in an already crowded timetable.
The second programme – Lunch in the Library – shows off the skills of Food Technologist Pat Pett’s GCSE class of talented young chefs. Under Michaels direction they serve lunch to Headteacher, Staff and Governors in the Library and it is judged a big success. But the question remains what will happen when Pat retires along with a third of her Food Technology colleagues across the country? Will there be the trained teachers to maintain this kind of standard in the future?
